FAQs for Prospective Clients

What types of legal issues can the Clinical Programs help me with?

If you are a low-income individual dealing with a problem related to housing call the main number and select the Housing Clinic. If you need assistance with a child-related issue, select the Child Advocacy Clinic. If you need assistance with Elder Law, select the Elder Law Clinic. If you are a farmer or non-profit organization needing assistance with forming your business, select the Transactional Clinic. If you are a Lafayette County resident needing assistance with tax returns, please see the Tax Practicum page for instructions. If you are seeking assistance with a claim of wrongful conviction, you must apply for assistance by letter. Please see the Mississippi Innocence Project page for instructions. If you want to ask for help with a criminal justice system issue, select the MacArthur Justice Clinic. If you are seeking assistance with divorce, custody, visitation, child support, guardianship  or expungement, please note that in these areas we provide assistance only through day-long advice and counsel clinics. How do I contact the Clinical Programs for legal services?

To apply for legal services or to make an appointment to visit with an attorney, you can call the intake/appointment line at: 662-915-7429. Select the appropriate clinic to leave a message. If you are unsure which to select, leave a message with the operator.

Does the Clinical Programs accept walk-in clients?

The Clinical Program does not encourage walk-ins, as we want to ensure that we have the appropriate time and resources to devote to each prospective client, and do not want you to travel to the law school unnecessarily. Please call the intake line to make an appointment.

If I contact the Clinical Programs, am I guaranteed a lawyer?

Due to limited resources, the Clinical Programs cannot accept everyone who seeks our help. Clinic staff will review each request for assistance, screen for eligibility and determine the appropriate response which may include legal information, advocacy, individual representation or referral elsewhere.

How much do the Clinical Programs' legal services cost?

Our services are designed to be provided on a no-fee basis. As a result, we typically restricts services to those who are unable to afford legal representation.

Who provides the Clinical Program’s legal services?

Clients are represented by student attorneys who work under the supervision of expert clinical faculty and experienced attorneys.

From Memphis

Take Interstate 55 south to Batesville, Mississippi. Take the Oxford Exit, Highway 6 East. Continue on Highway 6 for approximately 25 miles. Exit on Chucky Mullins Drive. Take a left at the top of the exit ramp. Go approximately 1/4 mile to the second stop sign. Turn Left. The law school will be on your right. Make your first right into the faculty/staff parking lot and park in the Visitor’s Parking Section. The Clinical Programs’ administrative office is located on the 3d floor in Room 3072 and they will assist you in getting a parking tag.

From Jackson
