OXFORD, Miss. — The Law Alumni Chapter of the University of Mississippi named Scotty Welch, a Jackson attorney, as the 2012 University of Mississippi Law Alumnus of the Year on July 13 at the Annual Meeting of the Mississippi Bar in Sandestin, Fla.
Presented annually at the UM Law Alumni Luncheon, the award is given to those who have demonstrated excellence in their chosen fields. The recipient is chosen by a nominating committee within the law alumni chapter.
“Scotty stood out because of what he has done nationally,” said Scott Thompson, executive secretary of the law alumni chapter. “He has been the national president of ABOTA, has given national service to the ABA and has served as the past president of the Mississippi Bar, among other things. It was his overall record that made him such a strong candidate for this honor.”
Welch received his B.A. degree from the University of the South and his LL.B. from the University of Mississippi School of Law. He is a current shareholder at the Baker Donelson firm in Jackson, Miss. where he practices as a civil trial lawyer with current emphasis on commercial disputes, financial services litigation, insurance coverage issues, personal injury, business tort, product liability litigation and first-party insurance disputes.
“I am deeply honored and humbled to have received the 2011-2012 award, which was totally unexpected,” said Welch. “I absolutely love the practice of law and hope I am able to continue in active practice, meeting new challenges and experiences and trying to give back to my profession daily, for years to come.”
Welch also added that his Ole Miss Law School degree has provided him valuable networking opportunities over the years.
Additionally, Mr. Welch has been listed among the top 50 attorneys in Mississippi by Mid-South Super Lawyers since 2006. He is a fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Litigation Counsel of America.
