SESSION ONE
1:15-2:00 p.m. A.) Goldilocks and the Three Bears with Mary Ann Connell, Treasurer Lynn Fitch, Bebe Garrad, Jamie Jacks, Merrill King Nordstrom, Ashley Tullos, and Vangela Wade

  • How to find the law practice fit that is “just right”
  • Explanation of different types of practices from government, in-house, large firm and small firms, business sector
  • Explaining a litigation practice versus transactional or regulatory
  • Will need 5 panelists to comment on different areas of practice

B.) You’ve Only Just Begun with Katrina Brown, Mike Carr, Tanya Ellis, and Will Manuel (.75 CLE Credit)

  • Overview of the practicalities of law practice
  • A Discussion of making the most of your support staff
  • Examination of billing time and deciding what your time is worth
  • The overhead of a law firm – what will it cost you to go out on your own?
  • How do you get paid and why do you get paid the amount you did?
SESSION TWO
2:15-3:00 p.m. A.) How to Make Friends and Influence People with Lily Bass, Chancellor Jaye Bradley, Chancellor Cynthia Brewer, Karen Clay, and John Henegan

  • An examination of the power of networking amongst your peers and community
  • Review of writing skills and decorum both in brief writing and email communication
  • How to handle the hostile opponent
  • Candid discussion of the obstacles women and young attorneys still face in the practice of law, along with ways to overcome those obstacles

B.) First Time’s the Charm with David Lynch, Ann Corso Taylor, Keishunna Webster, and Mary Clay Morgan (.75 CLE Credit)

  • An overview of best practices for your first big (or little) file
  • How to interview a client
  • How to establish the terms of your representation
  • Client representation contracts – best practices
  • First steps when reviewing an issue, transaction, or complaint served
  • Best practices for discovery, fact gathering, and due diligence
  • Looking forward to transaction closing, summary judgment, and/or trial

Enrollment

In order to register for these CLE, you must first register for the BYC Conference.

Once registered for the conference, you will then be able to register for CLEs. Registration is open to any BYC Conference attendee — interested parties including attorneys, judges, legal assistants, and law office staff. Walk–ins will be NOT accepted. Written materials will be given on the day of the seminar.

CLE Credit

This course offered by UM-CLE has been approved by the Mississippi Commission on Continuing Legal Education for up to 1.5 CLE credits. Registrants seeking mandatory CLE credit from another state should contact UM-CLE in advance of the seminar.

Cancellations

Refunds will be given as follows:

  • No call, no show will receive materials only, no refunds. In the unlikely event a seminar is canceled, registrants will be notified and issued full refunds.
  • There is a no refund policy for this CLE due to the low cost.
