The Red Mass is a Mass of the Holy Spirit which is celebrated annually at the opening of the judicial year. This Thirteenth Century European custom received its name from the red color of vestments worn by the celebrant and the scarlet robes word by the Lord High Justices. In the United States today, a Red Mass is celebrated in many dioseses across the nation and is attended by judges, lawyers, public officials, law faculty, students and graduates.
