OXFORD, Miss. — The University of Mississippi School of Law held its second annual HBCU Law Preview Day in September to provide prospective law students with a sneak peek of law school and the application process.
This year, the event was expanded beyond the state of Mississippi to include HBCUs from across the South. Nine pre-law advisors and 78 students attended the event from Alcorn State University, Grambling State University, Jackson State University, Lane College, Mississippi Valley State University, Oakwood University, Rust College, Southern University of New Orleans, Tuskegee University and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Throughout the course of the day, prospective students attended a law school class taught by UM Law Professor Larry Pittman, and an LSAT crash course led by a representative from the Law School Admissions Council. The students also attended a panel discussion on diversity, equity and inclusion in the legal profession, sponsored by Wise Carter, and a session on the Diversity Pipeline Program from Forman Watkins.
The preview day is part of an effort to build relationships with HBCUs and provide a clear pathway to law school. UM Law’s Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is focused on creating an environment at the law school that is inclusive, diversifies the legal profession, and accurately represents the population of Mississippi.
The event was sponsored by the UM Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, Baker Donelson, Wise Carter, Forman Watkins & Krutz LLP, and Burr Forman.
