Incarceration Transparency – Talk by Professor Andrea Armstrong
January 28, 2022 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Professor Armstrong from Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana, will talk about her work with the Louisiana Incarceration Transparency Project which seeks to expose the hidden costs of incarceration.
The mission of Incarceration Transparency is to publicly share data and research to address significant harms from conditions of incarceration. Prisons and jails are essentially “closed institutions holding an ever-growing disempowered population.” At any given moment in the United States, approximately 2.3 million people are behind bars, at least a quarter of whom have not been convicted of a crime.
Professor Armstrong will discuss the work of the Incarceration Transparency, how it came to be, the role of law students in its creation and success, and provide fascinating information about the status and effect of mass incarceration in our society.
Professor Armstrong and her Incarceration Transparency work was recently featured in a New Yorker Magazine article. See https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2021/08/23/a-fight-to-expose-the-hidden-human-costs-of-incarceration.
This event will also serve as the official launching of the Mississippi Prison Project here at Ole Miss.
