LGBTQ Rights, Rules, & Remedies – Part I

November 11, 2021 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

All law school faculty, staff, & students are invited to participate in this interactive discussion & workshop on issues related to the Rights, Rules, & Remedies associated with the LGBTQ student experience at the law school and across the university campus. Part I will be an informed discussion & workshop event, with audience engagement encouraged. Part II will be where the law school community facilitates a workshop for the wider university community.

The “workshop” portion of the event will be directed at training people how to generate pro se petitions for legal name & gender marker changes through the chancery courts of Mississippi. Other skills which will be presented include drafting Advance Health Care Directives, Power of Attorney, & Wills. Part II of the workshop will be the following day, where members of the wider university community will be invited to learn about their Rights, Rules, & Remedies, and receive individualized guidance from members of the law school community who attended Part I.

This event is funded by a grant from the Office of Diversity & Community Engagement, with support from OUTLaw, UM ACLU, the Law School’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee, Project One America of the HRC of MS, the LGBTQ Justice Project of the ACLU of MS, the TRANS Program, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Oxford. (Many representatives from the listed organizations will provide a welcome and a description of the contemporary issues they are working on related to LGBTQ justice.)
