Tampon Tax Refund Day
October 12, 2023 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
The ACLU Chapter of The University of Mississippi School is hosting a Tampon Tax Refund Day.
Mississippi is one of 21 states that still taxes menstrual products.
• A sales tax on menstrual products (aka tampon tax) unfairly burdens the state’s lowest income group, women and children. 19.20% of women in Mississippi live in poverty while the national figure is 11.70%. Low-income citizens may be forced to choose between purchasing menstrual products and other necessities.
• The American Medical Association deems menstrual products “essential for women’s health” and has called the tampon tax a “regressive” penalty. After a comprehensive study, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology concluded that “research supports the repeal of this tax in consideration of its financial, social, and political implications.” The average usage is more than 16,000 tampons or pads in a lifetime.
• Mississippi exempts many other items from sales tax, including Viagra, coffins, and candy.

Therefore, the ACLU Chapter of The University of Mississippi School is hosting a Tampon Tax Refund Day. Participants will bring receipts for menstrual products. We will then attach the receipts to pre-written letters addressed to the Mississippi Department of Revenue. These letters will demand a tax refund for these products.
The goal is to bring attention to the Mississippi Department of Revenue and Mississippi Legislators that the Mississippi Period Tax needs to end.
