Matthew Baker

Visiting Assistant Professor of Law

Professor Baker is currently serving as Visiting Assistant Professor at UM Law. Prior to joining the faculty in 2024, Professor Baker was a Senior Associate at Australia’s largest law firm, MinterEllison, where worked in the Environment and Planning group and, before that, in the Banking and Finance group.  As a practitioner, Professor Baker was a finalist for the Australian Lawyers’ Weekly national 30 Under 30 awards, which recognizes the nation’s best young lawyers, and was also listed as a ‘Rising Star’ in the area of planning and environment law by the international peer-reviewed Doyle’s Guide in 2022. Between 2019 and 2024, Professor Baker taught classes in Australian Constitutional Law and Administrative Law at the University of Technology, Sydney. During that period, he also served as a director and company secretary for St. John’s Community Services Ltd., a medium-size nonprofit which provides services for those in inner-city Sydney who have experienced homelessness or domestic violence.

Professor Baker earned his law degree from the University of New South Wales, where he graduated J.D. with Distinction. Prior to that, he graduated First Diploma (Valedictorian) and summa cum laude from Delta State University, where he was also captain of the men’s soccer team.

Professor Baker’s research interests include contract law and theory, administrative law, energy and resources law, environmental law, comparative constitutional law, and legal history.
