The University of Mississippi School of Law hosted its 3rd annual HBCU Law Preview Day, where 38 attendees got a glimpse into law school life.
The day included tours of the law center, a mock class, a crash course on the LSAT, a discussion with admissions staff, and a diversity panel where Ole Miss Law grads discussed their experiences and careers.
“As the new dean of the UM Law School, I am so impressed with our equal opportunity recruitment efforts,” said Frederick G. Slabach. “Our award-winning HBCU Preview Day is extraordinarily important and meaningful to the life of the law school. I am so impressed with the quality of the students who are considering UM Law.”
The annual event is open to all undergraduates. Students from eight institutions attended the event, including Alabama A&M University, Albany State University, Alcorn State University, Grambling State University, Jackson State University, LeMoyne-Owen College, Rust College and Ole Miss.
Attendees also heard from Rod Hickman (JD ’14), state senator. Other UM Law grads that returned to campus to speak with students included Kye Handy (JD ’15), Stephanie Hickman (JD ’91), Thomas Hudson (JD ’05), Natalie Lowry (JD ’22), and TreMarcus Rosemon (JD ’18).
“Now more than ever is the time for the University of Mississippi School of Law to create pipeline programs and to provide opportunities for diverse students to attend law school,” said Joshua Tucker, UM Law assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion. “HBCU Law Preview Day at the University of Mississippi School of Law is our commitment to diversifying the legal community.”
The event was made possible thanks to several sponsors: Balch & Bingham; UM Division of Diversity and Community Engagement; UM Division of Student Affairs; UM Black Faculty & Staff Organization; Darryl Wilson; and UM Law.
