The Law School’s deep commitment to teaching and research is reflected in faculty mentoring of student scholarship. Dozens of UM Law students publish articles each year—externally and in the Law School’s home journals. Recent student publications include placements in the Harvard Journal on Sports and Entertainment Law, University of Virginia’s Journal of Law & Politics, and the peer-reviewed Criminal Law Bulletin.

Student Publications

Academic Legal Writing Seminars

The Law School offers a wide variety of seminars which allow students to produce original works of scholarship for publication. Seminar topics include international criminal law, constitutional law, intellectual property, political and civil rights, gaming law, and aviation law. The Law School also offers a special class—Academic Legal Writing—for second-year students on the Mississippi Law Journal who are writing articles for publication.

The MLJ Comment Program

The Law School’s flagship journal—the Mississippi Law Journal—runs an intensive comment program for its second-year members, one coordinated with the Law School’s Academic Legal Writing seminar. Second-year students receive guidance from faculty mentors, 3L student editors, and their peers as they produce comments over the course of the fall and early spring semester.

Twenty-eight Law Journal 2Ls in the 2015-2016 comment program received offers of publication.

The MLJ External Publication Initiative

The Mississippi Law Journal has also partnered with faculty advisors to organize an initiative to increase the number MLJ students publishing externally. The MLJ provides its members with step-by-step submission instructions, expert advice on article placement, and flexible deadlines to ensure students have the maximum opportunity to publish their original scholarship externally.

Sixteen Law Journal 2Ls in the 2015-2016 comment program accepted external offers of publication.

The Fall and Spring Student Legal Scholarship Expositions

Each semester, the Law School’s Academic Workshop Program celebrates the success of student scholars by organizing a legal scholarship exposition. Selected students present their published articles to the Law School Community.
