The Lamar Order is an organization established by the Law Alumni Chapter of the University of Mississippi Alumni Association in cooperation with the University of Mississippi Foundation. Named in honor of L.Q.C. Lamar, a founding father of the School of Law, the Lamar Order administers substantial gifts for the benefit of the Law Center to encourage its recognition as one of the outstanding legal education centers in the United States.
As the legal profession in today’s society assumes more diverse and complex roles, so must the University of Mississippi School of Law modify and expand its educational programs. Members of the Lamar Order will help broaden the scope and content of these programs and enhance the total offerings of the School of Law.
Membership
Benefits of membership within the Lamar Order go beyond that of receiving annual giving credit to the school. Members also receive invitations to all Lamar Order events that are designed exclusively for members. These events include the annual Lamar Order Breakfast held each Law Weekend and a reception in Destin held in conjunction with the Mississippi Bar’s Annual Meeting.
Lamar Order membership is obtained through a minimum commitment of $10,000 to be paid in installments over a period not to exceed 10 years. Once the commitment is fulfilled, a member, who thereafter makes a gift of at least $1,000 in any given year, will be recognized as a Sustaining Member for that year. Affiliate membership, available to graduates whose date of graduation is not more than 10 years from the date of application for such membership, is obtained through a commitment of $2,000 to be paid over four years. Upon completion of this commitment, an Affiliate Member may become a full Member by making an additional pledge of $8,000 to be paid over a maximum period of eight years.
Gifts may be unrestricted (to support the areas of greatest need) or restricted to certain programs (e.g., an existing scholarship or program endowment, the new law building or the Lamar Order Endowment, which supports scholarships, Moot Court and Mississippi Law Journal activities, student and faculty awards and faculty research grants).
